Behind Rod’s emotionally charged vocals are the stories he writes from his own experiences.

His music is raw – it’s OUTLAW music.

Late 2003 Rod made his way into the studio to record an EP titled ‘Six Tracks Down’, at Valley Sound Studio Dairyville. Nestled in the rolling forest mountains behind CoffsHarbour, it was the perfect backdrop to create his music. With the help of a couple of great friends producer Pete Dyball and the inspirational Bill Chambers (Dead Ringer Band/Kasey Chambers), Rod was able to produce a remarkable recording that gained recognition from his peers.

Early 2004 saw Bill Chambers & Audrey Auld invite Rod to perform with them during Tamworth and it was described as “the best sound on the streets in five years”. This sound also resulted in Rod being chosen to perform in the Buskers Championships at Bicentennial Park in front of thousands of people in 2004, 2005 & 2006 respectively.

Rod has played and shared the stage with other notable artists such as Dave Gleeson (Screaming Jets) and The Stiltsons, Shane Howard (Goanna),Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter, Kim Cheshire (The Wheel) and Marcus Meier.

Rod has performed at numerous festivals throughout Australia including Gympie Muster, Caboolture Urban Country Muster, Charters Towers and Croydon Poddy Dodgers CMF in the Gulf Country of QLD, Tamworth CM Festival and Hats Off To Country, Nelson Bay CMF, Central Coast CMF in NSW.

Late 2005 saw Rod release his debut album ‘Dodging Bullets’ – an album that takes you on a journey of tales. Rod bares his soul on tracks such as ‘I’ll never understand why’ & ‘Thrill of the Chase’ to the simple ‘I Got Me a Boat’ and title track ‘Dodging Bullets’.

“For a relative newcomer Rod captures a quality in his music that many seasoned veterans would be envious of…. There’s a country rock quality about Rod but he doesn’t go far from the traditional feel….Rod Dowsett has a fresh sound, most importantly it’s his own and he isn’t trying to be anybody else….Great lyrics, great sound and great potential….Give this a bit of volume on the stereo and you’ll be impressed!” Bob Anthony Jnr, The Daily News

His single ‘I Got Me A Boat’  received national airplay, including ABC Radio’s show Saturday Night Country, making its Hottest 100 Tracks, reaching the Top 100 Country Hits Chart, plus the film clip hit CMC screens.

Rod was also honoured with three songs securing finalist spots in the Top 100 2005 Musicoz Awards Country Artist of the Year – they were ‘Dodging Bullets’, ‘Robbin’ & ‘Drunken Arsehole’.

His singles ‘Thrill Of The Chase’ – a great rockabilly number, full of edge and attitude, that immediately shouts “turn the volume up!”, made Top 70 on the Top 100 Country Hits chart – and ‘Killin’ Time’ – a blues-roots tune – both received great support on radio across the country.

“..I compared Rod Dowsett’s music to an onion – it might have a strong flavour but it can sure make you cry.” Deborah Minter, Cap News

Rod headed back into the studio with producer Pete Dyball and the result is Rod’s second album ‘Rhyme Or Reason’.  Released early this year, Rod has already received much hype from industry insiders. With the opening track ‘Fly Away’ caressing your ears, ‘Country Living’ making you swing and smile, the gritty story of ‘Tobacco May’, or acoustic ‘Where Roses Thrive’, the album has flavours for all tastes.

His first single ‘Fly Away’ was added to music channel CMC, while ‘Country Living’ was released to North America and Europe as a single, and charted #43 on the Europe ECMA Top 100 Country Radio Airplay Chart.

His current single ’12 Foot Tinny’ is making waves on radio with #23 on the Top 100 Country Hits chart.
